American Airlines Presents Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest 2009
Symphony of the Americas, Fort Lauderdale’s professional orchestra, announces its Summerfest orchestra schedule presented by American Airlines. Each summer, Symphony of the Americas (SOA), under the artistic direction of Dr. James Brooks-Bruzzese, collaborates with a European chamber orchestra, to present great concerts, master classes and educational experiences on three continents, as part of the Michael & Madelyn Savarick Global Outreach initiative. Summerfest 2009 begins in Budapest, Hungary, where SOA musicians join the Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra for concerts and a CD recording in early June. The Summerfest orchestra performs next in Panama, before settling in Fort Lauderdale for a three-week residency from July 6 – 22. On July 23, Summerfest continues with a performance residencies in Nicaragua and Guatemala.

 

Frank P. Tomasulo, Ph.D., will become the first recipient of the University Film and Video Association (UFVA) Teaching Award
New Orleans - Frank P. Tomasulo, Ph.D., will become the first annual recipient of the University Film and Video Association (UFVA) Teaching Award, based on his lifelong accomplishments in and commitment to film and television higher education. The award ceremony will take place on August 8, 2009, at the UFVA conference in New Orleans.

Veteran Theater Producer Shelly Gross Passes Away at Age 88 * June 19th 2009
West Palm Beach - Theatre impresario and Broadway producer Shelly Gross passed away on June 19, 2009, in West Palm Beach, Florida, after a long illness. With a career that spanned over fifty years, he created an unprecedented number of theatre operations around the country, produced shows for Broadway & National Tours and presented a who’s who of legendary performers including everyone from Judy Garland to Bruce Springsteen. He was 88 years old.

Miami Teens Compete in International Poetry Slam Festival
MIAMI - Six Miami-area teenagers will travel to Chicago, IL from July 14-19, 2009 to compete in Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Slam Festival. The festival includes participants from 50 cities from across the country participating in workshops and readings with established poets and performers, open mikes, and the National Youth Poetry Slam itself, a competitive event. The Miami "team," which includes a diverse range of some of South Florida's best young writers, was selected from participants in the local WordSpeak program sponsored by the noted arts non-profit Tigertail Productions. The Miami teens will be accompanied to Chicago by their coach solo theater artist and director, Teo Castellanos and teen mentor Maxis Madé. The teens include Erma Lee Butler and Shamoyia Gardiner from North Miami Beach Senior, Wesley George from North Miami, Rolando Fuentes from Miami Senior High, Yarminiah Rosa and James Sprang graduates of DASH.


WPI ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 6th ANNUAL SCRIPT COMPETITION
Two girls from Orange and Seminole counties will be honored with staged readings of their winning plays

ORLANDO - Women Playwrights’ Initiative (WPI) is pleased to announce the winners of their 6th Annual Script Competition. A variation to past script competitions, this year WPI accepted original plays written by school-age girls residing in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Lake Counties. The readings of the winning plays took place on Friday, June 19, 2009 at The Stage in Winter Springs.

Jessica Ross, a 12th grade student from Ocoee High School in Orange County, is the winner of the high school script competition (9th-12th grades) for her script Transference. Jessica’s play is inspired by her study of psychology, which she will go on to pursue a major in at University of Florida in the fall. She will also continue her love for writing by studying for a Creative Writing minor. As the winner at the high school level, Jessica is receiving a full scholarship to WPI’s 4th Annual Playwriting Workshop taking place on June 20-21, 2009. From the middle school category (6th-8th grades), Karina Dandashi placed first for her script Destination Reality. Karina is a 7th grade student from Indian Trails Middle School in Seminole County. Karina wrote her winning play in only 30 minutes.

 

Young at Heart Chorale receives funding from the Community Foundation of Central Florida
Winter Park - The Bach Festival Society is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the Community Foundation of Central Florida to fund publicity efforts and the purchase of new sheet music for the Young at Heart Chorale. The Young at Heart Chorale is a group of seniors who share a love of singing, meeting weekly to rehearse and socialize. Led by long-time Central Florida resident and music educator Jodi Tassos, the Young At Heart Chorale specializes in favorite standards and show tunes but covers many other styles and ranges as well. The Chorale has been in need of new music, and this grant will allow the Society to purchase music for the next four years.

 

Cultural Council Creates Arts Education Integration Grant
Exciting New Program is Partially Funded by the NEA and Kenan Trust
The Palm Beach County Cultural Council is excited to announce a new pilot grant, Building Learning Communities through the Arts (BLCTA). The goal of this project is to expand and advance outcome-driven arts and cultural education programs for middle school children and their teachers. The Cultural Council will award three matching grants of $17,500 each to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations to partner with a middle school and a teaching artist. Partnerships must develop and integrate 10 social study lessons over one semester. The lessons must use performing or visual arts as a teaching tool and result in a final performance or exhibit.The grant will also provide teaching artists and classroom teachers three half-day professional development workshops taught by a university arts education professor. The workshops will feature instructions about arts curriculum development, building artist-teacher teams and how to document and assess art education programs. This pilot grant program is being funded by a $25,000 grant from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and $57,500 from the sale of “State of the Arts” license plates. The program’s total budget is $92,500 and includes allocations for a workshop facilitator, an evaluator and management costs.

 

County Stimulus Funds Earmark the Arts and Fuel Innovative Tourism Marketing Campaigns
Among the campaigns to attract Palm Beach County visitors is Culture Key, a new 2-for-1 ticket promotion
The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a $3 million stimulus package that Tourism Development Council (TDC) agencies will use to help attract tourists and raise the short-term bed tax receipts. In an innovative step to help fuel the tourism industry, the board of county commissioners approved using the funds from a bed-tax reserve account. Of the $3 million, $2 million will go to the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and $1 million will be divided among four TDC agencies: the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, Sports Commission, Environmental Resource Management and Film and Television Commission.

 

InterACT Studio, Inc. of Jupiter is pleased to announce that it has earned full accreditation as an Outstanding Arts Education Institution for 2009-2010. InterACT operates InterACT Summer Theatre Camp, now in it’s 12th season.
Jupiter - The recognition was given by the National Accreditation Agency, which examines private schools and education programs and awards accreditation based on the curriculum offered, the number of teachers or counselors, the building and space given to classes, and other factors.

St. Petersburg - Marty is a retired managing partner of Accenture Ltd., the global techology and management consulting firm. He has almost 25 of experience in providing consulting services to Fortune 500 companies and large public organizations. He has extensive management and operation experience as well as expertise in the areas of organizational development and large scale change implementation. During his retirement, Marty has volunteered his time by helping local non-profits with strategic and business planning. Marty is married with four children and is originally from East Meadow, NY. He received his bachelors degree from S.U.N.Y. Cortland and his master's from the University of Maryland.

 

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECENTLY HONORED WITH ANNE FRANK HUMANITARIAN AWARD
St. Petersburg - The Florida Holocaust Museum recently honored 86 high school juniors from Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Manatee and Sarasota counties with the eighth annual Anne Frank Humanitarian Award. The two award presentations were held at the Museum on May 27 and 28, and were followed with dessert receptions. Dr. Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida , and Gayle Sierens, co-anchor for WFLA-TV News Channel 8 and the AFHA program's Honorary Co-Chairman, attended as special guest speakers on May 27 and May 28, respectively.

President Obama appoints Stetson University alumnus Max Cleland to federal post
DeLand – President Barack Obama has appointed Max Cleland, an active Stetson University alumnus who has served his country for 40 years, as secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission. A 1964 graduate of Stetson who earned a master’s degree from Emory University, Joseph Maxwell “Max” Cleland is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. While serving in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968, Cleland attained the rank of captain. He was seriously wounded in combat in Vietnam and, after a long recovery and rehabilitation, he began a career in politics.

 

UCF’s Studio 500 Brings Big Names, Bigger Opportunities to Orlando New Hannah Montana game highlights a string of successful projects
ORLANDO - Just down the hall from their classrooms,
UCF students and faculty helped to choreograph and create the new Hannah Montana video game and have worked alongside celebrities such as Tiger Woods and Derek Jeter. The University of Central Florida’s Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando features one of the largest motion-capture studios on the East Coast, an adjacent sound stage, production offices and editing
suites. Collectively known as Studio 500 -- a play on the building’s 500 W. Livingston St. location -- the facilities have attracted a steady stream of entertainment companies from around the continent in the first
18 months of operation and have hosted more than 25 UCF student film shoots. The complex provides students with invaluable production experience rarely offered on a university campus while bringing name recognition to
Orlando’s booming simulation and entertainment industry. Working with studio partner Vicon Entertainment’s House of Moves, faculty and staff from UCF’s graduate game-development program, the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA), typically operate the
cameras and sensors in the motion-capture studio with assistance from students.

Sarasota - The new prices are as follows:

Seniors (65+) $20
Children ages 6-17 $10
Children under 6 No Charge (no change)
Members: Free (no change)

  • The cost of admission will continue to include entrance to all of the venues including Cá d’Zan, Museum of Art and special exhibitions, Circus Museum and Tibbals Learning Center, grounds and gardens. Also included in the price of admission are children programs on the weekends and docent-led tours of the Museum of Art and Circus Museums. Parking in the FSU Cultural Center will remain free to visitors.
  • Children age 5 and under will continue to be admitted free of charge. School tours will also remain free. Students on assignment are still welcome for free through the education voucher program (available at www.ringling.org).

Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib passed away at his home in San Anselmo, California after a prolonged kidney ailment on Friday, June 19th 2009. One of the most accomplished of Indian musicians in the Classical tradition, Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib has been designated a 'Living National Treasure' in India, he is admired by both Eastern and Western musicians for his brilliant compositions and his mastery of the sarod.

 

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Receives $10,000
From The Community Foundation of Broward for Summer Camp Scholarships

Hollywood - The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood has been awarded a $10,000 grant from The Community Foundation of Broward, to provide scholarships for qualifying children who would like to participate in the Center’s Summer Arts Camp. This grant will give children ages 6 to 19 from low income families the opportunity to take part in a fun and structured educational summer program in the visual and performing arts. Children can choose between a series of theater and arts programs, including the “Young Actors” and “Young Artists” series, “Young Artists Advanced,” “Broadway Actors,” “Broadway Actors Advanced” and “Specialty Weeks.” Parents can enroll their young artists or actors in full-day or half-day sessions. Each program has a duration of one, two or three weeks, culminating with a special presentation for family and friends. Camp sessions will run through Friday, Aug. 21.

 

BROADWAY ACROSS AMERICA – ORLANDO ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH FAIRWINDS CREDIT UNION
Orlando – Broadway Across America – Orlando, presented by Florida Theatrical Association in partnership with the City of Orlando is proud to announce its new naming sponsor, FAIRWINDS Credit Union. Per company policy, the terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Orlando – Florida Theatrical Association, the non-profit presenter of FAIRWINDS Broadway Across America – Orlando, Broadway Across America – Ft. Lauderdale and Broadway Across America – Miami, celebrated its 20th Anniversary on June 30, 2009. Florida Theatrical Association was originally founded on June 30, 1989 with the purpose of educating and developing new audiences and to encourage and preserve the presentation of touring Broadway.
