This delicious pastiche has outstanding tuneful music and lyrics bursting with wit and humor. In a plot Daisy, daughter of Buttercup, seeks help to thwart a band of outrageous female pirates, who have taken her lover as a hostage. With the help of Iolanthe, the Fairy Queen and the Princess Ida, she enlists the aid of The Mikado, The Scorcerer, The Duke of Plaza-Toro, Admiral Sir Joseph Porter and Major-General Stanley to save the day. Everyone will be captivated, whether Gilbert and Sullivan fans or not, as this superb musical stands up in its own right. The script and lyrics have a Gilbertian ring to them, but uncluttered by heavy Victorianism. The songs have the soaring melodies, thumping rhythms and catchy tunes that capture the true Sullivan flavor. A few of them - Ribbic, Poor Static One, for example - are clever parodies of some of the pairs’ familiar successes. But far from being a " send-up " this glorious show is a genuine, affectionate tribute to the incomparable duo.
