Ernest Hemingway and Walker Evans: Three Weeks in Cuba, 1933
March 8, 2008 through June 1, 2008
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens presents Ernest Hemingway and Walker Evans: Three Weeks in Cuba, 1933, on March 8, 2008. The exhibition, on view through June 1, 2008, displays 37 vintage photographic prints by Walker Evans and seven copied prints that were found amongst Ernest Hemingway's possessions after his death, along with notes, and personal artifacts. These documents and images reveal a friendship between the two men in Havana during a time of growing political instability. The set of Evans' prints that Hemingway acquired in 1933 and stored away for years has never been exhibited until recently.
In May 1933, the young and unknown photographer Walker Evans arrived in Cuba, working on an assignment to take photographs for a severely critical book regarding the Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado. Evan's photographs embodied the reign of the Cuban dictator, depicting the violence and hostility that was brought upon the citizens. Around the same time Hemingway had arrived in Cuba from Key West on a boat, the Anita, to fish and to work on manuscripts. It was during this period that Hemingway wrote two short stories that later developed into To Have and Have Not, his famous 1937 novel set against the backdrop of roaring Havana and Depression era Key West.
In a cryptic note to Hemingway from Evans, he handwrites, "I have some pictures tonight, and will have more tomorrow." A meeting between the two artists has always been known, but the details were unclear until the recent discovery of the photographs and the notes in Hemingway's belongings. It was suggested that Evans, fearing that he was being watched by the dictator's secret police, gave his prints to Hemingway for safekeeping. Evans would later leave Cuba with 400 negatives, but Hemingway would keep the set of prints that Evans had given him.
"These Black and White photographs by Walker Evans are memorable," said Museum Director Maarten van de Guchte. "Seeing these indelible images of the great American photographer in the context of his friendship with the writer Hemingway tells you a lot. Here are two giants of American arts and literature looking at Cuba and at her people in a very tumultuous time, and recording their experiences in their own way. An important show for The Cummer and for Jacksonville."
The three weeks Hemingway and Evans spent together would have a lasting impact on each of them. The events they witnessed, the political upheaval they observed, and their many late night discussions, affected the style and powers of observation of each man for the rest of his life. Their paths never crossed again.
Ernest Hemingway and Walker Evans: Three Weeks in Cuba, 1933 is organized by the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, Florida and is toured by Curatorial Assistance, Inc., Pasadena, California.
A media tour is scheduled for Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Amy Chamberlin at (904) 899-6034.
A Member's Reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. Members are $10 and non-member guests are $25. The reception will include an evening of Cuban Infusion with live music, salsa dancers, fresh mojitos, and Cuban cuisine.
Special programs and events for visitors throughout the exhibition includes Art Adventures on Second Saturday, Art for Two, Especially for Seniors Talks & Tea, a lecture and film event with Hemingway scholar Carlene Fredericks and a digital photography workshop with Professor Ginger Sheridan (see attached program and event schedule).
The exhibition is sponsored by Elkins Constructors, Inc., Fidelity National Information Services, Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Pilot Pen, MPS Group, BACARDI, Swisher International, Inc., Millwork Design Studio, and JP Morgan Private
