The Council on Culture & Arts is pleased to present Impression of a Moment: Paintings by John Metcalfe an exhibition at the Artport Gallery from May 25 - July 25, 2011 as part of the Arts in Public Places program.
From an early age, John Metcalfe was drawn to all things artistic. He studied architectural and mechanical drafting, which allowed him to develop an eye for perspective and form. As an adult, Metcalfe became an avid art collector and opened a Havana based gallery to house his ever expanding collection. In 2001, his love for collecting artwork turned into a love for creating it. Metcalfe started painting landscapes in a dramatic and impressionistic style. These unforgettable paintings are described by the artist as "confetti."
"I create my paintings completely from memory and imagination. Trees don't have to be green; water doesn't have to be blue. I've heard my work described as "if Monet were to meet Jackson Pollock."
In this exhibit, the viewer will discover abstracted landscapes painted with acrylic on canvas. Metcalfe uses a bold spectrum of colors which is sure to uplift and transport the viewer into an enchanted "confetti" land.
This exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery Hours: 8:00am - 11:30pm daily. The Artport Gallery is located inside the Tallahassee Regional Airport, 3300 Capital Circle SW.
The exhibition is curated by the Council on Culture & Arts' Arts in Public Places program on behalf of the City of Tallahassee. For more information about this program, visit www.cocanet.org.
