2005 FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL SERIES
LSO Classical Series
The 2005 Florida International Festival is a 16-day extravaganza
of exciting entertainment. From July 15-30, Daytona Beach and surrounding
communities host world-class musicians and performing artists on
a variety stages for the enjoyment of Central Florida residents
and visitors.
The
Festival's centerpiece - the biennial summer residency of the London
Symphony Orchestra - is extremely special this year as the LSO marks
its 100th birthday! Daytona Beach is the LSO's final stop in a year
of centenary celebration performances.
Classical I (Friday, July 22, 8 p.m., Peabody Auditorium)
Violinist
Sara Chang joins conductor Marin Alsop and the LSO for a fabulous
opening program presenting Verdi's "Force of Destiny Overture,"
Violin Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich and Beethoven's Symphony No.
5.

II (Saturday, July 23, 8 p.m., Peabody Auditorium)
Maestro
Marin Alsop and the LSO, joined by Broadway superstar Laura Benanti
and Baritone Michael Shawn Lewis, along with vocalists Niffer Clark,
Nicholas Weuhrmann and Julia Truilo, present a Tribute to Bernstein.
Bernstein musicals to be highlighted include West Side Story, Candide,
Wonderful Town, On the Town and Trouble in Tahiti.

III (July 24, 4 p.m., Peabody Auditorium)
The
distinguished James DePreist, Permanent Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan
Symphony Orchestra, will direct the LSO and LSO Principal Cellist
Moray Welsh in Haydn's "Cello Concert in C Major," and
Mahler's "Symphony No. 5."

IV (July 28, 8 p.m., Peabody Auditorium)
Antonio
Pappano, a young conducting star, music director at the Royal Opera
House at Covent Garden and Music Director of the Accademia Nazionale
di Santa Cecilia in Rome, shares the stage with Cellist Han-Na Chang
and the LSO. Three spectacular pieces are on the program: "Ruslan
and Ludmilla Overture," by Glinka, "Cello Concerto No.
1," by Shostakovich and "Symphony No. 2," by Rachmaninov.

Maestro
Antonio Pappano conducts Pianist Emanuel Ax and the LSO in An Evening
with Brahms. The evening's program features Piano Concerto No. 2
and Symphony No. 4.

Pops (July 30, 7:30 p.m., Ocean Center)
Feel
the excitement of the "Music of Hollywood!" as Maestro
Dirk Brossé and the LSO fill the Ocean Center with a vast
array of Hollywood movie tunes! Music lovers young and old will
thrill to the tunes from big screen hits like Harry Potter, Raiders
of the Lost Ark, Star Wars and The Pink Panther. Other possibilities
include music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Around the World
in 80 Days; Jurassic Park; E.T., and Schindler's List. Don't miss
this stunning evening of music, which includes narratives and humorous
anecdotes told as only members of the LSO can tell them and perhaps
even a few surprises!

LSO Family Concert (July 28, 11 a.m., Peabody Auditorium)
Featuring the BellSouth Youth Ensembles
The
LSO Family Concert is open to all families as well as more than
2,000 children from local summer recreation programs. The LSO, joined
by the BellSouth Youth Ensembles, presents a morning of interactive
music. This year's program, called "Round the World,"
features music by composers from across the globe, including Brahms'
Hungarian Dance No. 5; Verdi's Grand March from "Aida;"
Prokofiev's "Troika;" Bernstein's "West Side Story;"
Elgar's "Nimrod" and Arnold's "Scottish Dance."
The LSO Family Concert is conducted by Ruman Gamba, Chief Conductor
and Music Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
