Jazz & Beyond Series


Jazz & Beyond makes its debut at the 2005 Festival. This brand new series features the "colors of music" - including jazz, comedy music, world music and music from diverse ethnic origins.

Cantabile

Cantabile are quite simply one of the world's top vocal groups. Outstanding in both Comedy and the Classics, they have delighted audiences for 21 years with an amazing range of programs from a cappella favorites to the sacred music of the last millennium. David Krakauer and his Klezmer Band

David Krakauer is an internationally acclaimed clarinetist who redefines the notion of a concert artist. Known for his mastery of myriad styles, he occupies the unique position of being one of the world's leading exponents of Eastern European Jewish klezmer music; and at the same time is a major voice in classical music. Jake Shimabukuro, Ukulele Sensation

Michael Kaeshammer, Jazz pianist

Michael Kaeshammer is one of the most exciting, young, jazz pianists on today's music scene. Classically trained in Germany, he fell in love with boogie-woogie piano at the age of 13. Within four years he was a veteran of the German night club, concert and jazz festival circuit. Still in his mid-20s, he has released a series of award winning, critically acclaimed recordings and has developed a large, international following through his dynamic live performances. Dervish Irish Band

Dervish was created by a group of five inspired musicians who developed an informal gathering into a working band that hit the charts with a bang! Dervish concerts are complete with high energy tunes, beautifully measured songs, charming lyrics of life and love, and inspiring melodies that lift audiences from their seats. Regina Carter, Jazz Violinist
July 27, 8 p.m., Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center

Regina Carter combines dazzling technical proficiency and profound compositional and improvisational gifts with a fresh, aggressive approach to her instrument and a multicultural perspective. In Carter's hands, the violin reveals both its melodic side and its potential for percussive expression. While studying classical violin her goal was to become a soloist in one of the major orchestras - until she heard a concert of Jean Luc Ponty, which hooked her on jazz. She counts among the leading artists on her instrument. Single Tickets: $38

Huun-Huur Tu, Throat Singers from Tuva

Huun-Huur Tu The Tuvans, a South Siberian Turkic people, preserve what are arguably some of the world's oldest forms of music-making. The best known genre of Tuvan music, xöömei (throat-singing), comprises natural sounds transformed into musical representations. The singers of Huun-Huur Tu create a beautiful, light, lyrical sound that melts the soul and should not be missed! Single Tickets: $25

LSO Flipside
July 27, 8 p.m., Bank & Blues Club

LSO Flipside showcases the various and often hidden talents of its musicians.
Singer songwriter Tom Norris is a violinist in the LSO. He is joined by fellow musicians for an evening of reflective and intimate songs, arranged for piano and string quartet. Norris' romantic ballads draw inspiration from the worlds of both classical and pop, with rhythm guitar and piano coloured by lush string arrangements supporting his heartfelt vocals. Single Tickets: $25

Family Fest is another new Festival series with opportunities for learning, discovery and exploration through music, stories and musical instruments.

Tomás Kubínek, Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible

Tomás Kubínek is an exuberant one-man show that is equal parts comic brilliance, virtuosic vaudeville and irresistible charm! His internationally acclaimed performances are a combination of clown comedy and circus act, theater and magic. Added to that are his own tireless experiments in the art of live performance and you have the creation of award-winning solo stage shows. Single Tickets: Adults, $15; children, $8

TYPO! Featuring Jamie Adkins

Jamie Adkins presents a hilarious, circus-oriented treat for all ages. "Typo!" has become a shorthand expression for a typographical error. As Jamie sits at his typewriter attempting to write a show, he stumbles into "errors" onstage making everyone laugh at his or her own imperfections. Joined by a musician-singer, and by Anne-Marie Levasseur, an amazing acrobat and comic artist herself, "Typo!" takes on a touching story-telling narrative that twists and turns, and travels from laughter to poignancy - all enhanced by song and music. Members of the London Symphony Orchestra are joined by animateur Rachel Leach to lead youngsters age three to eight in a fun-filled storybook-style exploration of musical instruments. Two different programs are offered, each one running about an hour. Each program is limited to 60 participants ages 3 to 8.

"IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY!" by Cas Public

CAS PUBLIC, a Canadian contemporary dance company. "If you go down to the woods today," their first show for young audiences, is geared toward children aged 6 to 12 and their families. Composed of a suite of six choreographic on children's fears -- fear of the night, growing up, difference, being afraid, imaginary fear, warranted fear... all of it aimed at taming fear, learning how to own it and finding possible solutions engenders.

Mini Concerts

Mini Concerts give music lovers an opportunity to enjoy intimate performances in local churches, senior centers and theaters, and then meet the artists in after-concert social gatherings. This years Mini Concert Series features two different chamber groups from the London Symphony Orchestra and a thrilling wind ensemble called Imani Winds.

Imani Winds

Imani Winds joined forces in 1997 to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet and explore the links between European, African and American music traditions. The name Imani, "faith" in Swahili, embodies this mission. In their time together, this young quintet ensemble of African/Latin American heritage has already established a distinct presence in the classical music world for their dynamic playing, innovative programming and inspirational outreach programs, which they have brought to many communities throughout the country.

Program:
Mozart's Letters: Featuring readings from Mozart's letters to his family and friends from his travels around Europe. The ensemble will play music by Mozart and his contemporaries in between and throughout the readings. This is a musical event! Narrated by Matthew Gibson, the LSO musicians performing Mozart's Letters include Gareth Davies, flute; Tom Norris, Violin, Malcolm Johnston, Viola and a cellist, to be announced.

Education & Outreach

Festival 2005 is jam-packed with chances for learning - no matter your age! Opportunities include the Stetson University Elderhostel program and workshops open to the public and featuring hands-on instruction from Festival artists. There are INformances -- concerts where music and education are coupled into special performances and offered free to the public. Artists mingle and answer questions in after-concert social gatherings.

Pre Concert Talks take place prior to each LSO Classical Concert. Featured speakers talk about the pieces to be performed that night and also share their personal experiences in the music industry. All Pre Concert talks take place in Peabody Auditorium.

Additional learning opportunities include the BellSouth Youth Ensembles, a week-long residency by Tuvan throat-singing group Huun Huur Tu and a special month-long exhibit at the Southeast Museum of Photograph at Daytona Beach Community College.

This year's INformance schedule includes appearances by Imani Winds, the David Krakauer Klezmer Band, Huun-Huur Tu, the BellSouth Youth Ensembles and Cantabile. Times and locations are TBD.

Huun-Huur Tu at The Atlantic Center for the Arts
Huun-Huur Tu, throat singing group from Tuva, serves as one of the 2005 Festival Artists in Residence. Housed at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, the group has set aside July 26 to conduct a special full-day workshop for children enrolled in the ACA Summer Camp program.

Celebratory Photography Exhibit
On June 30, 2005, The Southeast Museum of Photography at Daytona Beach Community College opens a 30-day photographic display on the history of the Florida International Festival and the London Symphony Orchestra. The display closes July 30.

BellSouth Youth Ensembles
For eight days, July 21 through 28, 23 of the best Florida All State high school instrumentalists come to Daytona Beach to train one-on-one with members of the LSO and professors from Stetson University. This week of training culminates with the LSO Family Concert, featuring the BellSouth Youth Ensembles.

Stetson University Elderhostel
Stetson University plays host to a weeklong Elderhostel program where senior participants enjoy time learning with and from the LSO! The agenda includes customized lectures, behind-the-scenes rehearsals and a personal look into the lives of LSO members and personnel. This year's program runs from July 25-30.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal Free Concert
July 26, 8 p.m., Peabody Auditorium
This special outreach full performance features the London Symphony Orchestra Septet (LSO members Carmine Lauri, violin, Robert Turner, viola, Alistair Blayden, cello, Matthew Gibson, double bass, John Ryan, horn, Chi-Yo Mo, clarinet, Robert Bourton, bassoon) performing Serenata Invano, Nilson; Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss; and Beethoven's Septet, with animation by a member of the LSO. A question/answer session follows the performance.

WCEU Free Concert featuring the LSO Brass
Friday, July 29, 3 p.m., Location: Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center

Music performed by the LSO Brass Quintet and Ten Piece Ensembles (members of the LSO) with special guest soloist, John Alley, piano.

Program: Scarlatti Sonatas arranged for Brass Quintet by Stephen Dodgson, London Miniatures written for ten piece brass by Gordon Langford, Tribute to Maurice Murphy by Dudley Bright with featured soloists Timothy Jones (Horn), Dudley Bright (Trombone) and John Alley (Piano).
