THE HISTORY OF SELBY GALLERY AND VISITOR INFORMATION

Ringling School of Art and Design's primary mission is to provide an intensive professional education in the visual arts through programs leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Founded in 1931, it is a private, independent, nonprofit four-year college. The institution maintains an enrollment of full-time and part-time students from diverse backgrounds, as well as the appropriate facilities to support them. In addition to its degree program, Ringling School of Art and Design offers exhibitions, courses, lectures and other art-related services to the local and regional community through its gallery, library, continuing education and community service programs. Since 1986, Ringling has augmented its instructional program with exhibits by nationally and internationally renowned artists in Selby Gallery. The Gallery provides community programming in the form of lectures, forums, panel discussions, and performing arts events. Participants include exhibiting artists and designers, visiting historians and critics, and Selby Gallery staff. Two shows originated in 1996 are touring nationally and, possibly, internationally.
