Women Playwrights’ Initiative Presents 3rd Annual Playwriting Workshop
Registration Deadline extended to April 15
Women Playwrights' Initiative (WPI) announces its next Playwriting Workshop, led by award-winning writer Deborah Brevoort. The Workshop, May 31-June 1, 2008, will be held at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., WPI’s third partnership with Rollins and its Department of Theatre.

The Workshop for women playwrights, titled “Writing the Main Character,” will explore how writers can make main characters more compelling, according to the New Jersey-based playwright who also lead the 2007 WPI Workshop.

Last year’s workshop participants raved about their experience. Comments included: “The Workshop was a nurturing and constructive venue for women,” and “I now see the value of knowing what is and isn’t possible for actors to do.”

Brevoort’s lengthy credits include Blue-Sky Boys – a fantasy about the heavenly heroes who inspired the engineers of the first Apollo moon mission. A workshop production of the play was Brevoort’s first appearance at PlayFest 2008 – The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays in Orlando. She calls it her “first accidental script.”

Brevoort is well-known as the author of The Women of Lockerbie, which was produced Off-Broadway in 2003 and in London in 2005. In late 2008, it is slated to tour for two years, produced by Tim Robbins’ Actors Gang in L.A.

For more information about the Workshop, contact Jennifer Cavenaugh, Associate Professor in Theatre, who is producing the event for WPI: 407-691-1268 or email her at jcavenaugh@Rollins.edu.

Online registration for the event on the Rollins College campus is available at www.womenplaywrights.com/play-writing-workshop.htm.

21st Anniversary Photographic Tour of Switzerland with Crealdé Executive Director, Peter Schreyer
May 10-18, 2008
Late this spring Crealdé School of Art Executive Director and Swiss native, Peter Schreyer, will guide his 21st photographic tour of Switzerland. Schreyer is a trilingual, internationally exhibited documentary photographer who has been teaching photography for 25 years in both community and college environments. He is well known throughout the state for leading documentary projects that celebrate the history and heritage of Florida communities. This tour to his native country appeals to photographers of all levels and travelers interested in an insider’s view into the history, contemporary life and physical beauty of this 700 year old democracy in the heart of Europe.

Participants will spend a leisurely nine days exploring and photographing the Swiss alpine region, the picturesque lake district, the Swiss Riviera, and historic cities small and large, including Berne, Interlaken, Montreaux and Lucerne. The tour group will be small (only eight participants to ensure maximum personal attention) and will travel off the beaten path along scenic back roads. Deluxe hotel accommodations have been selected for their picturesque settings and excellent dining. Excursions via our private rental van and topics will vary from day to day, allowing flexibility for the group’s specific interests. Historic farmhouses and vineyards, Alpine mountain scenery combined with light hiking, scenic train and boat rides, medieval towns and castles are just a few features of the planned day trips.

Tour cost for the land package is $2,195 (or $2,150 with a $35 Crealdé School of Art membership-an amazing miracle of math, saving you $10 for even more benefit), including a $500 deposit. It includes eight nights of deluxe accommodations, eleven meals, all ground transportation, admissions, trip and equipment preparation meeting prior to departure and photographic guidance and instruction throughout the trip. For more details visit www.crealde.org or call Peter Schreyer at (407) 671-1886. Registration Deadline April 10, 2008.

SassyKat Baskets presents classes in traditional Appalachian Basketry every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Leesburg Center for the Arts. It's fun! Classes start at 10:00am and go until the last basket is finished. We'll take a lunch break around noon, so bring a snack or come along with the gang to a nearby cafe in Historic Downtown Leesburg for a quick bite. Dress casually, and be prepared to get a little messy-we work with damp materials. The Appalachian Mountain chain stretches down the east coast of the United States, from Maine to Georgia. Professional Instructor Katy Avram uses many of the traditional Appalachian shapes and techniques in her baskets. These have been tested thru time, and have proven themselves to be functional as well as pleasing to the eye. So don't miss out on a minute of the fun. Never again say, "I've always wanted to," but take this opportunity to say "Guess what I did!"

New Expanded Orlando Youth Opera Program

Robert Swedberg, General Director of Orlando Opera, today announced the expansion of the company's renowned Orlando Youth Opera (OYO) into an encompassing Youth Opera Program. The expanded program, available to Central Florida students ages 7 to 18 years-old, is designed to explore the many facets of opera in a broadened format that will augment and enrich the musical education of the area's many young performers. Students who register to become members of OYO will continue to provide the opera with classically influenced young singer-actors for Main Stage (Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre) and Second Stage children's chorus and supernumerary (non-singing) roles. The new two-tiered registration and tuition format will allow those OYO registrants to enjoy various member benefits, including attendance at dress rehearsals and other special events, while selectively participating in the new series of class offerings at reduced fees.

"I am excited by the wonderful opportunities unleashed by this approach," says Mr. Swedberg. The class offerings will feature a series of Master Classes (classes featuring an expert or professional in opera), Workshops (interactive instruction by performing arts professionals) and Intensives (clustered classes relating to a single topic) in all disciplines of the opera art form. The program will also provide educational experiences and performances in collaboration with the many other members of the Central Florida arts community. For the first time, individual classes are now also offered to non-OYO members in a widening effort to share the broad scope of operatic arts with any interested students.

For OYO membership registration materials and class information, please contact Bobbie Demme-San Filippo at bobbie@orlandoopera.org.

Orlando Opera is a non-profit organization, with productions that are made possible, in part, by generous funding from our patrons, The National Endowment for the Arts, Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs, Orange County Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council and United Arts of Florida.

Photographic Travel: Papua New Guinea
Instructor: Rick Sammon

A photo tour to Papua New Guinea is like going back in time 10,000 years. It is exotic, fascinating and it offers some of the most thrilling photography in the world. Join Rick Sammon for his second visit to Papua New Guinea – which Rick calls, “The last great adventure on the planet.” Be part of a small and dedicated group of photographers on a special and exotic journey to photograph the Huli Wigmen and the Mudmen – and other clans – in this tropical and enchanted island paradise. You’ll get the most amazing people picture of your life and Rick will help you enhance them in Photoshop at day’s end. The people and culture of Papua New Guinea will be the focus of the workshop. But workshop participants will also focus their cameras on the incredible flora and fauna of Papua New Guinea. This is not the typical “tourist trip.” You’ll get up and personal with the local people, something few visitors to Papua New Guinea get to experience.

Package Price: $5,395, double occupancy; $6,295, single occupancy

Includes tuition, hotel, breakfast, dinner, land transportation, guide. Tips to guide and driver not included. International and domestic airfare not included. Space limited to 12 participants. As of April 21, only space for five participants left.

June 23-July 7
Photographic Travel: Mongolia
Instructor: Vincent Versace

Of all the world’s arid lands, the Gobi (which means simply “desert”) has the great air of mystery about it, perhaps because it lies at the heart of Asia’s remotest hinterland between the Siberian wilderness to the north and the Tibetan Plateau to the south. Largely unchanged since the days of Genghis Khan, Mongolia represents a rare opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the ancestors, in the path of the nomad. Most Mongolians adhere to Tibetan-style Buddhist beliefs, despite attempts to dismantle religion during the Stalinist purges. These tenacious people live in round, collapsible gers with their livestock, moving with the seasons.

Join Vincent Versace on this itinerary created to provide photographers a quintessential glimpse of Mongolian life and landscapes.

Package Price: $5,295 double occupancy; $5695, single occupancy

Includes tuition, accommodations-hotel, tents and gers, meals, land transportation, guide, tips to guide and driver entrancxe fees, and horse riding. International and domestic airfare not included. Space limited to 12 participants.

July 5-16
Photographic Travel: Peru
Instructor: David Muench

Join David Muench on this journey through a timeless land. Cuzco, the archaeological capital of South America, is backed by lofty mountains and surrounded by cultivated fields. More than 500 temples, Inca palaces, dwellings, terraces, other significant remains, colonial churches, convents, monasteries and mansions, as well as the famous ruins of Machu Picchu, are in the region. We will begin and end our adventures in the city of Cuzo (considered by the Incas to be the center of the world), which we will photograph by day and night. Leaving Cuzco, we will travel through the Sacred Valley on the Incas, a winding river valley surrounded by the snow capped peaks of the Andes. The area contains glorious remains of ancient civilizations, such as Pisac and Chinceros, which host colorful local markets, and we will have the opportunity to photograph the traditional mountain village of Willoq and Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually occupied settlement in the Americas. David also leads us to the amazing site of Machu Picchu – the most dramatic and enchanting site of all the Inca sites in South America. We will spend three nights in Tambopata, where we will experience the Rainforest and get pictures of toucans, parrots and macaws. On the field and through evening critiques, David will help you create great meaningful images. Peruvian native, photographer and Palm Beach Photographic Centre Executive Director Fatima NeJame will also be on hand to answer your questions and guide you through the “Land of the Incas.”

Package Price: $4,295 double occupancy; $4695, single occupancy

Includes tuition, hotel, breakfast, dinner, land transportation, admission fees to archeological sites and overnight trip to Machu Picchu, including overnight stay at the Sanctuary hotel in Machu Picchu. International and domestic airfare not included. Space limited to 12 participants.
