OLLI, Tallahassee Symphony join forces to offer stress-free symphonic music program
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Florida State University and The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra have formed a partnership to offer classes about symphonic music as part of OLLI's program targeted at retired individuals and folks over 50 who want to continue their education in a stress-free environment where there are no tests and no homework.
Persons interested in learning more about the partnership are invited to attend OLLI's Fall Showcase at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at the FSU Alumni Center, 1030 W. Tennessee St. The showcase and parking are free.
OLLI is associated with the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and is supported by the Bernard Osher Foundation, which funds lifelong learning institutes at more than 120 colleges and universities across the country.
The first class resulting from the partnership will be taught by Dr. Amanda Sauer, executive director of Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, at the Westminster Oaks Maguire Center beginning October 4.
Dr. Sauer will present three lectures on "Opening Night at the Symphony: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, 'Eroica.'"
This mini-course will delve into the symphony, helping participants understand the formal, historical and autobiographical elements that make it, as Joseph Kerman has written, "an authentic 'watershed' work, one that marks a turning point in the history of modern music."
For the final class, Dr. Michael Broyles will talk about his book-in-progress, Beethoven in America, which explores the meanings that have been attached to Beethoven's name and his music in America for the past 200 years.
The series of lectures will focus on listening and discussion and will culminate in a performance by the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra at its Oct. 23 opening night concert in the newly renovated Ruby Diamond Auditorium.
For information call OLLI at 644-8828 or 644-7947 or email at cby06@fsu.edu. Additional information also can be found at OLLI's Facebook site.

10:00am until the last basket is complete
SassyKat Baskets presents classes in traditional Appalachian Basketry
every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Leesburg Center for the
Arts. It's fun! Classes start at 10:00am and go until the last basket
is finished. We'll take a lunch break around noon, so bring a snack

work with damp materials. The Appalachian Mountain chain stretches down
the east coast of the United States, from Maine to Georgia. Professional
Instructor Katy Avram uses many of the traditional Appalachian shapes
and techniques in her baskets. These have been tested thru time, and
have proven themselves to be functional as well as pleasing to the eye.
So don't miss out on a minute of the fun. Never again say, "I've
always wanted to," but take this opportunity to say "Guess
what I did!"

DFAC’s New Cottage Campus is a Walk in the Park…
“It’s a win-win proposition,” states George Ann Bissett, the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Executive Director. “This is just an incredible location for our students… and for the community!”
The location Ms. Bissett is talking about is Dunedin’s new Weaver Park, on the waterfront of St. Joseph sound. The building is a 1921 bungalow that DFAC is referring to as it’s “Cottage Campus.” The new facility which the Kiwanis Club of Dunedin helped prepare, will house the DFAC print studio, stone carving and wood turning as well as plein air drawing and painting programs. “It’s just such a wonderful location for the drawing from nature that happens in plein air classes,” notes Catherine Bergmann, DFAC’s Director of Adult Education. “Actually, everyone is pretty thrilled to be here right across from the water” she added.
DFAC’s Cottage Campus adds to their Stirling Campus as offsite venues adding much needed classroom space for DFAC’s growing programs. “We have an ongoing need for space, especially during our expansion/renovation project,” explained Ms. Bissett.
The Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Gladys Douglas School of the Arts is currently registering for Fall classes at ALL of its locations. Instruction is available for both children and adults, with discounted tuition rates for Art Center Members. Daytime, evening and weekend classes are available as well as one day to week-long workshops in a variety of media. Register now for the Fall I session: September 13th – October 24th or Fall II session November 8th – December 19th. Please call 727.298.DFAC to register or visit the Dunedin Fine Art Center at 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin, Florida 34698. Class information and registration is available on the web at: www.dfac.org.
There will be meeting at TEMPUS PROJECTS for art students from HCC, USF, UT and SPC at 5pm on Friday the September 3rd. All art students from these programs are welcome to join us; grad students and undergrads, alike.
We encourage you to share this information with any art students that may be interested (preforming arts included).
Bring ideas, calendars, invites, and info to share. Come and meet people, network and find out how you can get involved in the art community beyond your college or university.

Fall Art Classes at DFAC present a World of possibilities.
What is the earliest memory you have about the creative freedom of art? Perhaps it’s the smell of a new box of crayons as you first opened them, or the tremendous feeling of the clay squishing between your fingers as you squeezed it. A blank sheet of paper, a ball of clay and a world of possibilities.
Those possibilities of course are still there inside of you. The Dunedin Fine Art Center just wants to help you realize them. There are no grades in their classes, no failure, just the reward of freeing your creativity. Whether it’s a drawing, painting, photograph, sculpture, or piece of jewelry you have inside you waiting to be freed, DFAC has the class to help you do it!
