Outdoor Figurative or Landscape Oil Painting Workshop
Intermediate to Advanced skill levels

Instructor: Phil Sandusky, author of "Jacksonville Through a Painter's Eyes"
Friday, Saturday, Sunday - March 26, 27, 28
Each day of the workshop will be divided into two 3 hour session in which the instructor will be present 8:30am -11:30am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Students will learn to paint from the landscape at the beach with the added optional elements of a sunbathing figure model (in a swimsuit) and possibly architecture, if architecture is available. The particular aspects of this subject most interesting are the subtle sometimes counter-intuitive color variations and textures that distinguish the various properties of the sand (ranging from dry loose sand far away from the water to wet compacted sand close to the surf), to the various configurations of the water (spanning the tidal pools, the ankle deep foamy water, the breakers, and the deeper water), to the color variation in the sky. Placing a human figure and/or other objects into this setting adds more layers of interest and complexity. Students who prefer to focus more on the figure or more on the beachscape will be encouraged to do so.

Free Painting Lectures and Demonstrations at Polasek Museum April 25-30, 2010
Instructors offer insight into painting “en plein air.”
In conjunction with the second Winter Park Paint Out, the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens will present five days of free artist lectures and demonstrations from April 25 through April 30, 2010. These lectures and demonstrations will be provided by five eminent Florida painters: Linda Blondheim, Cynthia Edmonds, Sally Evans, Stewart Jones and Mitch Kolbe. No reservations are required.
Stewart Jones, “Watercolor Demonstration,” Sunday, April 25, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Watercolor can be a difficult medium when painting en plein air. Stewart Jones shows how to work from light to dark in order to capture a scene. His technique uses abstract layers of light values and darker patterns to produce a unique watercolor painting.
Cynthia Edmonds, “Oil Painting Demonstration,” Tuesday, April 27, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
This session covers many of the basics of plein air oil painting including materials, mediums and composition. Cynthia Edmonds demonstrates the direct painting technique - paint is applied opaquely to the canvas, with each brush stroke capturing a specific element in the scene.
Sally Evans, “Pastel Demonstration,” Wednesday, April 28, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Pastels are an unusual painting medium requiring the artist to mixed and blend colors on the paper rather than on a palette. Sally Evans shows how to combine both drawing skill and color awareness to create a unique pastel painting. Included is information about the materials and types of pastels available to pastel artists.
Linda Blondheim, “Acrylic Demonstration,” Thursday, April 29, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Compared to oils, acrylic paints are a relatively new medium. In this session, Linda Blondheim shows how acrylics can be used effectively in plein air painting. Several techniques are taught which allow the artist to achieve oil-like results using this quick drying paint.
Mitch Kolbe, “Oil Demonstration,” Friday, April 30, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Mitch Kolbe gives a talk on color harmony and its use in plein air painting. Starting with the basics, Mitch progresses from "Color 101" to more advanced techniques and applications for the working professional. Color concepts are the focus of this oil painting demonstration.
Jan Clanton, “Changing Landscapes, Changing Visions Lecture,” April 30, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
This lecture focuses on how the tradition of the landscape in American art has been prominent for over 200 years. Initially, the landscape was a symbol of unlimited potential and spirituality. Over the years, this national symbol has evolved to depict industrialization, derangement in society and even environmental concerns. Join us to examine this uniquely American tradition in all its permutations.
Instructor Biographies:
Linda Blondheim, Gainesville, attended the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida. She is founding member of a number of plein air art organizations, and her paintings are found in private and corporate collections around the country.
Jan Clanton is the associate curator of adult programs at the Orlando Museum of Art. She teaches art appreciation in Central Florida and is initiating a new program this year at the Orlando Museum of Art for those with memory loss, Art's the Spark @ OMA.
Cynthia Edmonds, Winter Park, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University, a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Florida and studied at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art. A native of Winter Park, she began painting in Seattle, and after returning to this area, began devoting all her time to landscape painting.
Sally Evans, Winter Park, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design and fine art from the University of South Carolina and is known for her bold use of color and design. Her subject matter ranges from the beaches of Florida to the deserts of the Southwest.
Stewart Jones, Orlando, received a degree in commercial art from Ferris State University, where he studied illustration, design and painting. Primarily a watercolorist, he displays his works in local art galleries and participates in a number of art festivals.
Mitch Kolbe, Tarpon Springs, studied at the Art Students League of New York, the Salmagundi Art Club and later at Queens University of Charlotte. He has worked as a commercial artist, graphics printer, muralist and sculptor.

The Artist's Guide to Public Art
How to Find and Win Commissions
A Workshop by Lynn Basa and Joel Straus
Saturday, February 27, 2010, 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
At Casselberry City Hall, Casselberry, FL
Price: $180
Details regarding registration will be released in October
This workshop presented by Lynn Basa and Joel Straus, is derived from
Basa's book of the same
name. Joel Straus (of Joel Straus Consulting, Ltd.) is a successful art
consultant, also based in
Chicago, who has partnered with Basa to present this workshop.
Although there are other books on the subject of public art published
by administrators for
administrators, The Artist's Guide to Public Art is the first book of
its kind written by a successful,
professional artist specifically for use by other artists. It was published
by Allworth Press in 2008 and
may be ordered from your favorite retail or online bookstore for about
$20. We invite you to read it in
preparation for this workshop, which will cover a wide variety of subjects
including the following:
*How to write a winning letter of interest
*How to get into the top third of contestants
*How to understand and negotiate with the culture of bureaucracies
*How to present your project with business savvy
*How to manage your project and your subcontractors
Want to learn more about Lynn Basa? As a first step, we
invite you to listen to her interview with the
Southern Arts Federation. Simply visit our website at www.floridasculptors.com
and click on Click
Here To Listen to Lynn Basa's podcast
. Also, visit her web
site at www.lynnbasa.com.
If you have
read this far, then you probably should order the book.
Some of you are new to this field. Some have competed before and a few
have won public art
commissions. The question we all face is: Where are the gaps in my knowledge?
What must I learn in
order to win more? You have spent years, perhaps decades, developing your
art. Are your business
skills honed to the same degree?
We all recognize that in this troubled economy, public art programs are
in danger. The City of Orlando
is a recent example. But there were about 350 programs in the US last
year. Many of these programs
will survive and many of them will be open to you. Will we shrink from
this challenge or will we
emerge from it smarter, more capable and more competitive than
before? We cannot move
comfortably into the future on the basis of what worked in the past. Our
objective is to re-think our
strategies and tactics and set the stage to FIND and WIN more commissions.
We invite you to join us.
Presented by Florida Sculptors Guild with generous help from the Seminole
Cultural Arts Council

SassyKat Basket Class
429 W. Magnolia Street
Historic Downtown Leesburg, Florida 34749
10:00am until the last basket is complete
SassyKat Baskets presents classes in traditional Appalachian Basketry
every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Leesburg Center for the
Arts. It's fun! Classes start at 10:00am and go until the last basket
is finished. We'll take a lunch break around noon, so bring a snack
or come along with the gang to a nearby cafe in Historic Downtown Leesburg
for a quick bite. Dress casually, and be prepared to get a little messy-we
work with damp materials. The Appalachian Mountain chain stretches down
the east coast of the United States, from Maine to Georgia. Professional
Instructor Katy Avram uses many of the traditional Appalachian shapes
and techniques in her baskets. These have been tested thru time, and
have proven themselves to be functional as well as pleasing to the eye.
So don't miss out on a minute of the fun. Never again say, "I've
always wanted to," but take this opportunity to say "Guess
what I did!"

YDP is the Gorilla Theatre's professional playwriting contest for teens.
Write a short play and submit it by February 15th. The five winning plays
receive a full professional production at the Gorilla Theatre.
Teens! Join Teen Actors Gang @ The Gorilla (TAGG)
Do you know a teen, age 13-18, who is interested in developing their acting
skills on a pre-professional level?
Tell them about Teen Actors Gang @ the Gorilla (TAGG).
TAGG Students are challenged to be 100% present during every class.
Not just there, but there, prepared, focused and ready to collaborate.
Each week the students are introduced to different approaches to acting
and theatre. The skills learned give the students an arsenal with which
they can confidently tackle most acting roles.
In addition to class work, students have monologues and scene work for
the fall session and collaborate on a short play for the spring session.
These projects will require a commitment to the program beyond attending
class. Homework is expected each week. But it's theatre, so it's fun homework,
right?
The short play in the spring is seen by public audiences and is a fully
realized production.
Ami Sallee Corley instructs throughout, allowing the classwork to reflect

Art Classes at DFAC present a World of possibilities.
What is the earliest memory you have about the creative freedom of art? Those possibilities of course are still there inside of you. The Dunedin Fine Art Center just wants to help you realize them. There are no grades in their classes, no failure, just the reward of freeing your creativity. Whether it’s a drawing, painting, photograph, sculpture, or piece of jewelry you have inside you waiting to be freed, DFAC has the class to help you do it!

STONE SCULPTURE WORKSHOP
High School- Adults Welcome!
Students will work in limestone, soapstone and/or marble, experimenting
with low and high relief as well as three-dimensional forms. The emphasis
is on the tradition of stone carving, as opposed to sculpture in general,
but we do consider rudimentary principles of 3-d design. We use traditional
hand tools as well as pneumatic tools and ultimately the students produce
both a group project and individual pieces (and quite a bit of dust!).

Josette Urso- Collage to Painting
February 8-12, 2010 | $580
This course takes a lively approach to exploring the interrelationship
between collage and painting. Students will employ the historically
unstructured medium of collage as a means of sketching and as a springboard
for ideas in painting. At first work will begin simply, then will become
progressively more complex as students are urged to push the limits
of the mediums and their ideas. As the work done in one medium assists
and influences one's vision in the other, the collaboration between
process and concept will encourage the production of less planned and
more unexpected images.
About Josette:
Josette received her MFA in Painting from USF in Tampa, Florida. She
has received numerous awards, including The Yaddo Residency in 2009
and a second Pollock-Krasner Award in 2008. In New York City, she has
exhibited her work at the Drawing Center, DFN Gallery, Julie Saul Gallery,
Lyons Weir Gallery, and Metaphor Contemporary.

Alliance Offers Free Preview of New Kids Class Music Together
The Alliance for the Arts is offering a free preview of their new class Music Together, designed to bring families together in a fun environment while introducing children to the basics of music. Introductory will be held February 26th, from 5:30 - 6:15PM and March 20th from 10:30 - 11:15AM.
Music Together is an internationally recognized class designed to engage infants, toddlers and preschoolers in musical activities, with parents and other children. Classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. Youth can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

Go Behind the Scenes at FST
Theatre Appreciation classes continue
Ever wanted to know how a play is produced from start to finish? Or
what the rehearsal process is like? Florida Studio Theatre takes theater
fans behind the scenes of the theatrical process and allows a further
appreciation of the theatre in a new class session beginning the week
of November 30.
One of our most popular classes of the first education session, Behind
the Scenes at FST invites students to get an intimate view of the theater.
Throughout an eight-week class setting, students will be invited to a
series of readings, rehearsal and discussions of the next Mainstage production,
Ruined.
Ruined is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about Mama Nadi, the owner of
a canteen, who serves up everything from a cold beer and a warm meal -
to the company of a woman. It is a glimpse into the Congo during a decade
of civil unrest.
Participants got a glimpse of how the rehearsal process begins from
the cast's initial meeting. Students in Session I were invited to the
first table read of FST's opening Mainstage production, The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee, on October 27. This was the first time the
Spelling Bee actors and artistic staff came together to discuss the upcoming
musical and conduct a read-through of the show in its entirety.
Students also have the opportunity to join the professionals for Script
Analysis, Design Concept Meeting, Play Panel Discussion, First Run Through
(first time actors run through show in rehearsal), Tech Rehearsal and
Dress Rehearsal, giving a full circle of creation from start to finish.
If students want to express their literary wit and explore the dynamics
of the American drama, the Play Reading Club class offers a book club
setting with a focus on plays. The class will meet weekly to read and
analyze scripts, and will require outside reading assignments to fully
delve into discussion and exploration, with a special eye toward production
and performance values.
In addition to reading plays and listening to the stories of all different
genres, students can enroll in TrueSpeak, a class based entirely on the
storytelling genre of our lifetimes. Participants will develop and perform
their own true narratives in a friendly and supportive environment. Beth
Duda, the Director of Education, says that the participants "often
laugh so hard as we are recounting the stories. The stories range from
really funny to very poignant moments." These sessions will culminate
in public performances in the Cabaret later this year.
All classes are held in FST's professional rehearsal studios in the
heart of downtown Sarasota. 1241 North Palm Avenue. The class fees range
from $59 - $199 and will begin the week of November 30. Act now! Most
classes have limited space. Reservations can be made by contacting FST's
Education department at 941.366.1350 or by visiting www.floridastudiotheatre.org.
The adult teaching staff is comprised of a core of theatre professionals
trained to teach free from personal dictates. Our methodology helps each
person find his or her own "door" to creative achievement. In
addition, guest artists and teachers visit throughout the session

students seeking supplementary instruction in visual and performing arts
classes . The After School Arts program is offered for students
grades 1st 8th and coordinates with the school year calendar running

instructors in both sections of the curriculum, visual and performance
art.
Visual arts classes will combine a variety of mediums and
artistic styles in a fun and nurturing environment. Teachers will incorporate
art history, studies of famous artists and art awareness to inspire students
while they learn the fundamentals by experiment with painting, collage,

on stage. A creative fun environment will inspire students to break out
of their shell and discover new ways of expressing themselves. There will
be a short performance for family and friends at the end of the session.

the corner of Colonial and McGregor, and pick up time will be 6:00PM for

Additional Information on Steven Assael
Steven Assael (born 1957) is an American painter recognized nationally
as one of the leading representational figurative artists of his generation.
His portrayal of the human image is empathetic, ennobling, and psychologically
penetrating.[1] Assael's figure compositions synthesize the characteristics
of the past masters with a selective eye for the present, suffusing elements
of naturalism and romanticism to blend contemporary techniques with those
of the past.[2] His paintings have been called Post-Post Modern and works
strictly from live models. Arlene Raven describes him as wanting "the
greater possibilities of duration. More variety, and a broader range of
values and colors, a chronicle of the transformations of changing light,
spent over real minutes and hours with his model.

OREGON COAST CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITERS WORKSHOPS, SUMMER 2010
www.occbww.com
Next summer, July 12-16 and July 19-23, 2010 we proudly will present
the eighth Oregon Coast Children's Book Writers Workshops, www.occbww.com,
in the exquisite Oregon coast town of Oceanside. The instructors for each
workshop will include five established children's book authors (between
them, specializing in YA and middle school novels, picture books, non-fiction,
magazine pieces, and poetry), two children's book editors from major houses,
and one children's book agent. Summer Workshops 2010 promise to be our
best yet because
- The instructor-student ratio will be a maximum of one to six,
- Each day, you will meet with an instructor for at least one comprehensive
consultation, and
- You can have one-on-one informal meetings with instructors each day
as well, and
- Every student who wishes can have an anonymous first page manuscript
critique by all eight instructors in front of the class, and
- We will offer at least twelve instructional lectures on various aspects
of writing and publishing, and
- There will be two evening readings/discussions by instructors, and
- Out-of-class consultations with instructors are available, and
- There will be at least three guest lectures, and
- There will be two wonderful parties (quite appropriate for friends,
partners, spouses, children)
If you are ambitious to publish a children's book (or simply adore children's
books), this is the workshop for you. It will allow you to connect directly
with authors, editors, agents who are active in the children's book business.
If you go to the website and look under Evaluations, you'll see that it's
received extraordinarily high praise.
The course is available for graduate credit.
