Pensacola Opera Announces 2009 Summer Camps

Pensacola Opera will present two weeks of Opera Camp this summer, providing an environment for fun and learning for campers ages 8 to 13.

Opera Camp gives children a chance to experience all of the elements of opera production. It culminates in a public performance of an opera created by campers under the guidance of a professional opera director and musical coaches. Campers play music and theatre games that teach them the skills used in operatic performance, and will gain hands-on experience in set, costume, prop, and makeup design. No previous experience or training is necessary for Opera Camp.

· Week One, July 6 through 10, will conclude with a performance based on Johan Strauss’ Die Fledermaus.

· Week Two, July 14 through 20, will have as its final performance a version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

Each camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a final performance for families at 5pm on Friday. Cost is $150 per week – each week is a separate program; Opera Campers can choose to participate in either or both. Opera Camp is open to students from age 8 to entering eighth graders.

Fee includes lunch, snacks, all materials and a t-shirt.

For more information or a registration form, call the Opera at (850) 433-6737 or visit www.pensacolaopera.com

Pensacola Opera is also the main partner in the UWF Summer High School Music Camp for students between the ages of 14 and 18 from July 12-July 18, 2009. Interested students will experience a broad array of musical instruction including beginning and advanced theory, musicianship classes (sight-singing), class piano, ensemble playing/singing, conducting, music technology, private applied instruction, and a host of evening concerts and activities. Women Playwrights’ Initiative (WPI) ANNOUNCES FOURTH ANNUAL PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP
Women Playwrights’ Initiative (WPI) is pleased to announce their Fourth Annual Playwriting Workshop with Deborah Brevoort, award-winning author of The Women of Lockerbie. Plotting Along, a workshop in playwriting, will be held at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida on June 20 and 21, 2009.

Plotting Along, with Deborah Brevoort, will explore the most technical aspect of writing - plot. Issues to be examined include: given circumstances, ingredients for action and conflict, plot devices, plot structures, working with genres and subverting genre expectations. This will be a nuts and bolts workshop, designed to give writers a toolbox of techniques, tricks and devices to use when writing for the stage.

“We are so pleased to welcome Deborah back to WPI for another exciting workshop,” said Courtney Miller, Co-President of WPI. “In the past, Deborah has inspired so many of our workshop attendees that I am sure several will return again this year. We hope to also welcome some new aspiring women playwrights.”

Deborah Brevoort holds MFAs in playwriting from Brown University and in musical theatre writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she currently teaches. She also teaches in the MFA playwriting programs at Columbia University and Goddard College, and at the New School's Eugene Lang College.

The registration deadline for the Plotting Along workshop is May 8, 2009. Women participants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Space is available for 12 women playwrights and a payment of $400 is required at the time of registration. The deadline for cancellation is June 5, 2009. Each participant should bring in 15 pages of a script to workshop. Applicants should visit www.WomenPlaywrights.com to download the application. Scholarship opportunities are available.

For further information, contact Olivia Horn at ohorn@rollins.edu or (407) 646-2253.

Historic Downtown Leesburg, Florida 34749
10:00am until the last basket is complete

SassyKat Baskets presents classes in traditional Appalachian Basketry every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Leesburg Center for the Arts. It's fun! Classes start at 10:00am and go until the last basket is finished. We'll take a lunch break around noon, so bring a snack or come along with the gang to a nearby cafe in Historic Downtown Leesburg for a quick bite. Dress casually, and be prepared to get a little messy-we work with damp materials. The Appalachian Mountain chain stretches down the east coast of the United States, from Maine to Georgia. Professional Instructor Katy Avram uses many of the traditional Appalachian shapes and techniques in her baskets. These have been tested thru time, and have proven themselves to be functional as well as pleasing to the eye. So don't miss out on a minute of the fun. Never again say, "I've always wanted to," but take this opportunity to say "Guess what I did!"

Gulf Coast

Summer Art Classes at DFAC present a World of possibilities.

What is the earliest memory you have about the creative freedom of art? Perhaps it's the smell of a new box of crayons as you first opened them, or the tremendous feeling of the clay squishing between your fingers as you squeezed it. A blank sheet of paper, a ball of clay and a world of possibilities.

Those possibilities of course are still there inside of you. The Dunedin Fine Art Center just wants to help you realize them. There are no grades in their classes, no failure, just the reward of freeing your creativity.

The Dunedin Fine Art Center's Gladys Douglas School of the Arts is currently registering for Summer classes, with discounted tuition rates for DFAC Members. Daytime, evening and weekend classes are available as well as one day to week-long workshops in a variety of media. Register now for the Summer I session: June 8th - July 19th, Summer II session: July 20th - August 30th , or Workshops May 30th - June 7th. Created in 1984, the Dalí Museum Junior Docent Program is a summer student program offered to children 9 to 13 years of age. The Junior Docents are trained in a one-week mini docent class where they receive personal attention as they learn about the collection. This program concludes with a public reception where the children conduct the tour, sharing their knowledge of Dalí and his paintings with the public. Junior docents are encouraged to put the information in their own words, helping them to appreciate art in new ways. They participate in fun, surreal-inspired activities; and they make new friends.

Ultimately, the Dalí Junior Docent Program benefits students by building self-esteem, enhancing their speaking skills, providing opportunities to verbalize personal choices, and bringing families into the museum to share in the students' accomplishments.

DFAC Summer Art Camp Scholarships Available

How do you make an already successful Summer Camp Program even better? "MORE is better" according to Todd Still, Director of Youth Education at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. This year the camp offers programs for teens as well as a separate Musical Theater Camp. "We're trying to offer the breadth of programs that parents are looking for, as well as make the experience available to as many as possible" says Mr. Still.

To that end, scholarships this year are available on a first-come, first-served basis, to those who complete a simple application process. Partners such as Employees of the St. Petersburg Times, Pinellas County Cultural Affairs, The Kiwanis Club of Dunedin, Dunedin Rotary, Dunedin Rotary North and the City of Dunedin, as well as many individuals have given funds to make these scholarships possible.

Ken Hannon the Director of Communications for DFAC feels it's important to offer these enrichment programs, which give such positive experiences to the children involved. "Studies show" he notes "that children who study art, end up doing better in ALL of their studies."

BASIC DRAWING AND OIL PORTRAIT PAINTING
At Owens' studio or the student's home. Ongoing private instruction. Flexible hours.

This is an ongoing private class designed for one or two people. It may be held in the student's home or at Brian Owens' studio in Deltona. For one student in his studio: The price is $20 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. For two students in his studio: The price is $30 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. A reasonable charge for mileage will be added if he travels more than 30 miles from his studio (one way) to the student. Materials and supplies are not included.

Owens was featured in the November 2006 Art Spotlight. He specializes in teaching basic "classical" skills that will form a foundation the student can build on. Owens will tailor his instruction to match the student's level of skill and personal artistic goals. If the "goal" is unknown, that's fine too. The content, pace and density of the
instruction is fully adjustable. The student's level of skill isn't nearly as important as his or her state of mind and desire to learn. Owens will recommend specific materials and supplies prior to the class.

For more information kindly contact Brian Owens directly at 386-956-1724 or Email brian@brianowensart.com. To see his work kindly visit his web site at www.brianowensart.com

Turning Memories into Memoir
Instructor: Neil de la Flor
Six Mondays: June 1-July 6, 2009, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Join this fun and innovative introductory course to memoir writing. Open to everyone, from beginners to advanced writers, this course will encourage students to find what they've forgotten and turn those memories into fabulous works of prose and poetry. Through innovative writing techniques, such as exquisite corpse and other in-class writing games, students will experiment with language as a way to access their sub/unconscious memories. Students are encouraged to bring in old photo albums, thoughtful letters from family and friends, and other keepsakes to help jumpstart the process.

Neil de la Flor’s literary work has appeared most recently in Court Green, No Tell Motel, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Sentence, and Barrow Street. He is also the co-author of Facial Geometry, (NeO Pepper Press) a chapbook of collaborative triads written with Maureen Seaton and Kristine Snodgrass. He is lives in Miami, Florida.

Writing Earth—An Intro to Environmental Writing
Instructor: Michel Hettich
Six Tuesdays: June 2-July 7, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

In this six-week workshop we will write and critique poems, stories and personal essays that take the natural world as their subject matter. In addition, we will attempt various writing exercises designed to develop students’ abilities to write in organic forms and to think in ways that attempt to capture something of the “inner life” of nature as it exists in South Florida and the larger North American landscape. We will also examine examples of great nature writing as we attempt to extend and deepen our conception of the genre’s possibilities.

Michael Hettich has published a number of books and chapbooks of poetry, most recently Flock and Shadow: New and Selected Poems (New Rivers Press) and Swimmer Dreams (Turning Point), both of which were published in 2005. His most recent chapbook, Many Loves, was published in 2007. A new book, Like Happiness, is forthcoming from Anhinga Press in 2010. His poems have appeared in such journals as Witness, Poetry East, Orion, Prairie Schooner, and TriQuarterly. His website is Michaelhettich.com.

Writing Really Short Stories—All About Flash Fiction
Instructor: David Beaty
Six Thursdays: June 4-July 9, 2009, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Flash fiction? Sudden, mini, micro, postcard, short-short? These are names for very short stories, between 250 and 1,750 words long. The genre is experimental, the word length variable. In this workshop we’ll investigate very short stories, and we’ll write our own. We’ll read and discuss anecdotes, scenes, advertisements, jokes, parables, prose poems, and very short fiction by established writers such as Hemingway, Peter Altenberg, and Jayne Anne Phillips. Expect writing exercises in workshop, and be prepared to bring in your own very short fiction to be discussed.

David Beaty has lived and worked in Greece, England and Brazil. A graduate of Columbia College, he earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University, where he was a recipient of the Josephine Friedman Award For Fiction. His short stories have appeared in Miami Noir, Unbound Press, Having A Wonderful Time, and other anthologies and literary journals. His short story, "Ghosts," was chosen for The Best American Mystery Stories 2000; and, most recently, his story, "The Last Of Lord Jitters," received honorable mention in The Best American Mystery Stories 2007, edited by Carl Hiaasen.

Charon Kransen: Developing Your Talents for the Design Arts
This seminar is recommended for serious artists who aspire to be nationally or internationally recognized as tops in the fields of Sculptural Objects and Functional Arts. Jewelers, ceramicists, glass artists, woodworkers, sculptors & collectors of the Applied Arts are encouraged to attend.

Kransen's seminar is based on the concept of encouraging artists to work from their unique talent instead of relying on the more common route of commerical work that is often dictated by main-stream demand/taste. He will give psychological insights that will inspire and empower each artist.

His premise is that most artists are ill prepared in matters relating to professional life in their relationship with galleries, dealers and clients, The seminar focuses on issues of: identity, recognition, success, clients, collectors, "the market", ethics, presentation and galleries.

To that end, Kransen directs discussion around central themes of dealing with how galleries work, what their motives are, how they select work, how they develop a vision, and how the artists develops contacts with the gallery, with the client and with the dealer.

Workshop dates: April 3, 4 & 5
Tuition: $330

This workshop will give improvisers the skills they need to solve problems in a scene. The first hour will be dedicated to character problems and learning how to find the emotional core of your character and of the scene in which you are involved. The second hour will be dedicated to using "game" or the rule of three/ heightening to help in the slow point of a scene and/or to help in a slow point of the show. The third hour will be dedicated to helping the structure of a scene whether it is its beginning, middle, or end. The final hour will be dedicated to running scenes and getting notes. The workshop ends with a performance.

From within these simple choices and blind love will emerge the comedy that comes with real relationships.
Fee: $29.00
Intro to Improvisation (FST Improv)

You'll augment the improv skills that you have, and find that creating spontaneous music can be a great tool in your arsenal for a skit, a set, or for developing your own act. Included will be a warm-up, followed by a brief intro to music improv, developmental games to quicken the wit, and finally, ending with group songs.
Fee: $29.00

A “Contemporary” Art Camp

Once again, Art Center Sarasota is getting ready to kick off its popular Creative Kids Summer Art Program. Summer Camp at ACS is a long-standing tradition. The Center itself, remarkably, is the oldest arts organization in Florida and goes all the way back to 1926. So what's in store for 2009?

"We've scheduled ten spectacular, fun-filled weeks between June 8 and August 14," says youth outreach coordinator Dr. Phyllis C. Brown. Each week will explore a different theme, ranging from the circus, an all-time favorite, to the world of the news. The program is designed for children aged 6 to 11 and teens aged 12 to 16. Classes will run Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 3pm and will be led by professional arts educators.

The Art Center has rightly identified the community-building potential of the art camp experience and will ensure that students come from diverse backgrounds. Several scholarships have already been awarded to economically disadvantaged children. But of course creativity, especially that of children, knows no social barriers.

“This summer promises to be the most wildly imaginative yet. Students will delve into the magic of art. There will be butterflies, birds, beasts, medieval mysteries and visits to far-away cultures. We will design costumes, paint acrobats and yes, there will be a little bit of ‘clowning around’".

Learning through play seems to be an essential part of the Art Center’s unique and proven approach to summer youth education. But the program is not without a certain rigor. In a safe and supportive environment, campers will acquire demonstrable, hands-on skills in a wide variety of techniques including painting, drawing, sculpture, printing, collage, beading and textile dyeing. In keeping with the digital age, kids will also learn the basics of graphic design. “Ours is a very contemporary Art Camp”, states Dr. Brown.

Another sign of the times is the ecological theme that dominates the whole summer. “Art is more than just an enjoyable creative outlet for kids. It’s more than a developmental tool. Art can raise environmental awareness. And for the first time, we're going green.”

Children will look to nature for inspiration and learn how to use art to promote a healthy environment and a peaceful, sustainable world. Many of the planned projects will emphasize the use of recycled materials and natural resources such as clay. Kids will also work with found objects, sticks, leaves and feathers. They will even paint with vegetables. This summer, we can expect some really delicious artwork to be created at Art Center Sarasota.

The fee for a 5-day week is $145 for ACS members and $195 for nonmembers and includes all supplies. Call 941.365.2032 to reserve a spot for your child or log on to www.artsarasota.org.

THE OREGON COAST CHILDREN'S BOOK WRITERS WORKSHOP, SUMMER 2009
www.occbww.com

This summer, July 13-17, 2009, we proudly will present the seventh Oregon Coast Children's Book Writers Workshop www.occbww.com in the exquisite Oregon coast town of Oceanside. The instructors will be five authors, David Greenberg, Eric Kimmel, Pamela Smith Hill, Tom Birdseye, and Margaret Anderson, one children's book agent, Susan Cohen (Writers House), and two children's book editors, Molly O'Neill (HarperCollins), and Jill Dembowski (Little, Brown). Summer Workshop 2009 promises to be our best yet because

- The instructor-student ratio will be a maximum of one to six,
- We will have five author-instructors (specializing in novels, picture books, non-fiction, and poetry), one children's book agent-instructor, and two editor-instructors,
- Each day, you will meet with an instructor for at least one comprehensive consultation, and
- You can have one-on-one informal meetings with instructors each day as well, and
- We will offer at least twelve instructional lectures on various aspects of writing and publishing.
- There will also be guest lecturers

If you are ambitious to publish a children's book (or simply adore children's books), this is the workshop for you. One of our 2003 students, Maureen Hoessle, has just had her first book published: Under Three Flags, Exploring Early St. Louis History. She credits our workshop for helping to make this happen. Another student, Anne Carrelli, gives us great credit for the imminent publication of her first picture book, Amina's New Friends. Three other authors from our past workshops have signed with Susan Cohen, our agent-instructor, who is actively representing their work (and who will be back with us next summer).

The course is available for graduate credit.

For complete information, including reviews from last summer's attendees, we welcome you to visit our website at www.occbww.com

If you're interested in joining, there are only a handful of class slots left, so you should probably register fairly soon. www.occbww.com

Costa Rica Writers' Retreat
Costa Rica Writers' Retreats at Docelunas 4-star resort, an eco-friendly, tranquil oasis on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Our writers' retreat will reawaken your senses and creativity. Write, listen to one another read aloud, and give feedback underneath a palm thatched roof, with the aromas of your next meal prepared by a master chef infusing the air. Sit on your private porch and work on that novel chapter you've been struggling with all winter. Climb the steps to the yoga studio overlooking the gardens and rejeuvante with a bellydance or yoga class; Docelunas has the only certified Bikram yoga studio at a hotel in the world. Give yourself the gift of space and your imagination the recharge of an environment teeming with artistic stimulation: scarlet macaws, toucans, and blue butterflies.

Week-long retreats taking place in May and June of 2009 will be led by Vanessa Blakeslee, Vermont College MFA in Writing graduate and Amherst Writers & Artists Affiliate. The retreat team will include Vermont College faculty Robin Hemley, Xu Xi and Sue Silverman. Writers working in all genres and from all levels of experience are welcome. Several times a day we will come together to write from exercises offered which follow the Amherst Writers workshop method (AWA), as well as produce new work in themed workshops throughout the week. Craft talks will be given on several evenings after dinner. Daily breaks allow for optional excursions to beautiful Punta Leona beach, Carara National Park, and Playa Hermosa. Your time is your own to write, relax, explore, reconnect with others...and yourself.
